EXPLORERS:
"I love backpacking! I have over 20
years experience in backpacking at various levels and through a wide
variety of terrain including desert, forest, and altitude in all
weather conditions. I continually update my training, but have specific
training in wilderness first aid and wilderness survival, navigation,
and search/rescue; P.O.S.T.-certified (Peace Officer Standards and Training) in lost-persons tracking (or 'mantracking' in the search and rescue vernacular). I’ve enjoyed
training hundreds of people in the last 7 years in beginning-advanced
level backpacking adventures. I've now concluded an 8-month hike coast-to-coast through middle America. I feel that I have greatly advanced my understanding and appreciation of American ecology. Since I've been back, I continue to explore and have, thanks to John's expertise, recently completed three summits of Colorado's fourteen thousand foot mountains. More expeditions forthcoming! "I started backpacking as a teenager, going on weekend and overnight trips along the rugged cliffs and canyons of the Brazos River. I loved the adventure and the feeling of freedom and the special challenges they presented. Today, I’m still an avid outdoorsman, backpacking, rock climbing, and mountain biking, anytime I can get away. One of my goals is to summit all 54 of Colorado’s 14,000 ft mountains, having successfully completed 45 to date. I am looking forward to finishing the remainder in the next couple of years. My most recent challenge was to successfully complete a self-supported, long distance, thru-hike across the U.S. on the American Discovery Trail. The trip definitely changed the way I think about backpacking and enhanced my perceptions of the various people and cultures that make up our country. It will no doubt influence how I plan and carry out future trips as well" John Wingate jlwingate@yahoo.com

"In 2008, Lory Wingate embarked on an eight-month, 3,500-mile, 13-state
hike across America. In March the expedition began from the shores of
Delaware and in November, on the shores of California, the journey
concluded. This book captures a series of essays about topics that were
most often asked by people interested in the hike. Interspersed with
journal entries and personal experiences from the adventure, topics are
presented as themes for the reader to explore."
